Mike Van Ryn to Return
Mike Van Ryn's wrists have been through a lot the past few years. The Panthers defenseman has endured four surgeries -- three on his right wrist alone -- as he has tried to regain the strength and power that fueled his slapshot and helped him become one of Florida's top players at the position. Van Ryn missed 62 games last season after having his second surgery on his right wrist in less than a year. He said the time off has helped him heal, and his wrist feels as good as ever. The Panthers hope Van Ryn is right. ''I feel awesome now,'' said Van Ryn, who spent last week helping coach a youth camp in Coral Springs.
Sens Sign Hennessy
The Ottawa Senators have signed centre Josh Hennessy to a two-year, two-way contract. Hennessy played five games with the Senators last season and was held scoreless while averaging 3:45 of ice time per game. He started the season with the Senators, appearing in two games before being returned to Ottawa's American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton. Hennessy was recalled on Jan. 31, playing three games before being reassigned to the B-Sens for the duration of the season. The 23-year-old made his National Hockey League debut with the Senators during the 2006-07 season, scoring one goal and registering four penalty minutes in 10 games. He scored his first NHL goal on Jan. 7, 2007
Sundin to Drop Hint
Mats Sundin is expected to decide by Friday whether he will play in the NHL next season but he is not expected to decide where he will play for a few more days after that. The reluctant free agent was scheduled to chat with agent J.P. Barry's Swedish colleague, Claes Elefalk, today in Stockholm and Barry is optimistic that Sundin will at least drop a hint. Sundin is sitting on a $10-million-a-season offer from the Vancouver Canucks for either one or two years. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens are also in the Sundin sweepstakes but they are not in Vancouver's financial arena.
Ville Koistinen Signs
Predators defenseman Ville Koistinen was awarded a one-year contract at $700,000 as part of the NHL’s arbitration process. Koistinen’s arbitration case was heard by an independent arbitrator on Monday (July 28) in Toronto. Koistinen was a restricted free agent this summer and filed for arbitration prior to the July 5 player deadline. With the award announced, the contract is in the process of being signed by both Koistinen and the Predators and should be finalized by NHL's Central Registry in the coming days. With the deal, Nashville now returns seven of its eight defensemen from last season, having signed Kevin Klein, Ryan Suter, and Shea Weber earlier this off-season to go along with Greg de Vries, Dan Hamhuis, and Greg Zanon each of whom had time remaining on his contract.Koistinen, 26 (6/17/82), played his first National Hockey League season in 2007-08, registering 17 points (4g-13a) in 48 games. The Tampere, Finland native ranked second on the club and tied for third among rookies in plus/minus rating (+13) in addition to tying for second among Nashville blueliners in power-play points (2g-9a-11pts). The 5-11, 190-pound d-man also earned a bronze medal while representing Finland at the 2008 World Championships in May 2008.Signed as a free agent on May 18, 2006, Koistinen played his first season in North America with Milwaukee in 2006-07 and was named to the PlanetUSA squad at the 2007 AHL All-Star Classic. Prior to joining the Predators organization, Koistinen played eight seasons in the Ilves Tampere system in his homeland.

Chares Dropped
Grand theft charges against Ryan O'Byrne have been dropped.
O'Byrne allegedly stole a woman's purse on February 11th and he was arrested outside of a Tampa nightclub due to the incident. "He completed a diversion program and read a letter of apology to the victim in the case," state attorney Pam Bondi said. "He showed us proof that he's continuing to do community service work in Canada and that he has stayed out of trouble for the last five months, so we dropped the charges."

Oilers Third Jerseys
The Edmonton Oilers new third jersey will pay homage to the 1980s Stanley Cup era of Wayne Gretzky, reports Howard Berger, a reporter with the Fan 590 sports radio station in Toronto. Berger reports he has seen photographs of all 15 new third jerseys for NHL teams, including the Oilers sweater. The new Oilers jersey will replace the third jersey, designed by Spawn originator Todd McFarlane, which came out in 2001. "The Oilers are going back to their glory days with the predominantly blue jersey Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier et al. wore on the road while winning five Stanley Cup titles between 1984 and 1990," he reports on Hockeybuzz.com.
Hockey Night In......Africa
Sure, Robyn Regehr and Zdeno Chara had pictures to show the children of Mozambique what hockey was like. The interpreters did their best, too, explaining a rink was like a soccer field covered in ice and they had sticks, pucks and knife-like blades on their boots to move. One place, during the NHLer's recent trip to Africa, had props for them to actually demonstrate -- branches that crudely looked like hockey sticks. So, using a lock for a puck, they demonstrated passing and shooting. "I don't know if the kids got it," Regehr says with a chuckle, "or if they just thought we were crazy." Crazy or not, the memories that the Calgary Flames defenceman re-turned with from Africa will last with them forever.
Preds Top Pick Wilson To Stay In University
Predators prospect forward Colin Wilson, the seventh overall pick in last month's NHL entry draft, has decided to return to Boston University for his sophomore season instead of turning pro. There had been some thought the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Wilson might leave college after his freshman campaign and play for the Predators or for Milwaukee of the American Hockey League, in part because the 18-year-old was physically ready to play against older competition. But Predators General Manager David Poile said the team supports Wilson's choice to stay in school for at least one more year. Nashville will retain Wilson's rights.
Bruins Sign Two
The Bruins signed restricted free agent centers Martin St. Pierre and Nate Thompson to contracts yesterday. Terms were not dislosed. St. Pierre was acquired in a July 24 trade that sent Pascal Pelletier to Chicago. The 24-year-old St. Pierre played the bulk of last season with the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate in Rockford, recording 21-67-88 totals in 69 games. Thompson, a sixth-round draft pick of the B’s in 2003, spent the past three seasons with AHL affiliate Providence. In 75 regular-season games last year, the 23-year-old recorded career highs in goals (19) and assists (20).

On February 26, he was acquired by the Rangers, along with David LeNeveu, Josh Gratton and a fifth round choice in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for Al Montoya and Marcel Hossa.

Eklund-Boumeester Rejected Big Deal
Talking to a source this morning who informed me that Boumeester is heading to arbitration, and that "The Panthers are acting internally as if they will move him. The feel they have no choice."Another source, "The will try to trade him prior to the Arbitration. They can't repeat Luongo."more on this in a few hours...Also I can confirm stricklands report from yesterday that Don Granato will indeed be the next coach of the Chicago Wolves.

BRYLIN CONFIRMS KHL DEAL
By MARK EVERSON
Sergei Brylin is less than thrilled at the way he's leaving the DevilsNew Jersey Devils . The 13-year Devil confirmed yesterday he's planning to sign a lucrative three-year deal with St. Petersburg of Russia's burgeoning Kontinental Hockey League. Brylin and the Devils passed on each's option for a $1.53 million contract for the coming season. The 33-year-old forward wanted a longer-term deal, and the Devils are looking to inject youth, so Brylin asked the Devils not to pick up the year. "They made me a better offer than I got anywhere in the NHL," Brylin told The Post yesterday. "It was pretty clear to me that I wasn't in the [New Jersey's] future plans. If I'd extended my contract for one more year and played the same amount as I did last year, it was going to be tough getting a new contract. "So I made this decision before it was too late."

Vermette deal closer? And Who is Talking to Mats? plus some more
Spent the day running around and spending some needed time with the kids. Yes it really is summer....Tonight I am going to dinner in the city and then COLDPLAY at the Wachovia with the stunning Mrs. Eklund who looks frigging amazing. I am a lucky, lucky man. Here is a quick update, but I may be updating late tonight as I am supposed to get a phone call from Sweden tonight at 1 am.From a source regarding Vermette...."The Canucks will make this move if and when the Mats situation resolves, but I am told that regardless of whether Mats decides to take the Canucks up on their offer or not, Vermette stands a strong chance of being a Canuck in the next few days..."Yes, that implies what you think it implies...that even the Canucks believe this is going to happen sooner than later. Pretty interesting on a lot of levels. On Mats...Reports are out today that the Leafs are in the running still, and I am told that Mats has had discussions with Leafs legend Borje Salming in regards to Salming's regrets of leaving the Leafs to end his career elsewhere. Mats does care a ton for Salming's opinion and Salming is the forefather to all Swedes and also one of the Leaf players whose number should be hanging in the rafters...Perhaps above all others...When he talks, Mats listens. The point to all of this is this: Mats is still a top flight player at this point. Salming, when he went to Detroit, was pretty much done (or so I am told). So the only reason Mats could be letting this sway him is that Mats truly cares about never putting on another team's sweater. And while certain people (MiB) may be mad at Mats for this, I do feel there is a certain honour to it all that should be acknowledged. Hell...loyalty is said to be dead in sports. Also I an looking into a report that the Sharks may have had some communication recently with Selanne. That could bring Teemu full circle and would be interesting. Also, the Flyers are not done I am hearing and still have interest in a "puck moving D-man" via the trade route...more on that tomorrow..

Nash Getting Excited
Rick Nash is excited about the new additions to the Blue Jackets.
He is especially excited about forward Kristian Huselius and Raffi Torres up front and Mike Commodore on the blueline. Huselius is a strong contender to play with Nash on the top line, and both could help each other to huge seasons. Huselius had 25 goals and 66 points last season, which was down somewhat from the 34 goals and 77 points he had the year before. Nash had 38 goals and 69 points in 80 games last year. Bot have the potential to reach the 80-point plateau and it could happen this season.

Hartley To Islanders?
"Former Atlanta coach Bob Hartley is scheduled to meet with Islanders general manager Garth Snow about the head coaching vacancy on Wednesday, according to an NHL source. Hartley will be the second candidate to interview, but he and Snow won’t have to waste time with any get-to-know-you formalities. Hartley once coached Snow at Cornwall in the AHL, and the two have maintained a good friendship ever since to the point of exchanging fairly regular e-mail messages. There’s little doubt Hartley meets Snow’s criteria for a coach in terms of discipline and providing structure and technical expertise. But the major question for Hartley is whether he has the patience for a long-term development ..."

It’s a two-way contract that will pay York $750,000 with the Blue Jackets and $100,000 with the minor-league Syracuse Crunch.“Mike is a proven NHL player who has had two seasons that have been not at the level he was previously,” Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. “He’s trying to get his career back on track.“We expect him to seriously compete for a job here. If he can get back to a level he was on the Island (2005-06), he’ll be a very good addition for us.”York, 30, has played in 578 NHL games with the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Edmonton, Philadelphia and Phoenix.Last season, in 63 games with Phoenix, he had six goals, eight assists and a minus-8 ratings. A year earlier, split between the Islanders and Flyers.

AVALANCE, SVATOS AGREE TO A TWO-YEAR CONTRACT
The Colorado Avalanche announced the signing of forward Marek Svatos to a two-year contract, thereby avoiding arbitration.
"Marek Svatos has been a key ingredient to our success the last few years," said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere in a statement. "He's scored many big goals for this club and we expect him to be a strong force for us again this season."
Svatos, 26, finished the 2007-08 season on the team in goals, with 26, despite missing the last 16 games of the season with a torn ACL. His six game-winning goals tied him with teammate Wojtek Wolski for the club lead.
A seventh-round selection by the Avalanche (227th overall) in the 2001 Entry Draft, Svatos finished his rookie season in 2005-06 ranked third in goals among first-year players (32) behind Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.

Augusta Replaces Mississippi as Lightning ECHL Affiliate
TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning have entered into a one-year affiliation agreement with the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL, it was announced today by Lightning vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton. Augusta will serve as the Lightning’s primary ECHL affiliate starting with the 2008-09 season. Norfolk Admirals general manager Mike Butters, Augusta general manager Dan Troutman and owners Jan and Robert Burch made the announcement at a 1 p.m. news conference today in Augusta. The Lightning organization will provide the Lynx with players under NHL and AHL contracts. Tampa Bay will also play a role in selecting the coaching staff.“We are extremely pleased to welcome the Augusta Lynx to the Lightning organization,” Lawton said. “The Lynx and their management team are committed to success and it shows by them making the playoffs in six of their 10 seasons in operation. We feel that due to the organization's desire to win, and because of its proximity to Tampa and our AHL affiliate in Norfolk, there really is not a better option for us in the ECHL. We look forward to our prospects playing an important role in bringing the Kelly Cup to Augusta.”“We are thrilled to be a part of the Lightning organization, and we look forward to working together in order to win championships,” Troutman said. “With the aggressive moves their new ownership have pursued since purchasing the team, we feel Tampa Bay's commitment and passion to winning is a great asset to our club. Our goal as a club is to bring the Kelly Cup to Augusta, and an affiliation with an organization with as much success as the Lightning have had brings us closer to that goal. We look forward to helping young players refine their skills on their road to the NHL.”Tampa Bay previously had secondary affiliations with Mississippi, Pensacola, Johnstown, Toledo, Chesapeake, Nashville and Knoxville of the ECHL. Tampa Bay is entering the second year of its affiliation with the Norfolk Admirals, who serve as the Lightning's top minor league affiliate.Based in Augusta, Georgia, the Lynx were founded in 1998. The team played as the Raleigh (NC) IceCaps from 1991-98. The team posted a 32-35-5 record last season as an affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks and qualified for the postseason for the third consecutive year. They were eliminated by the South Carolina Stingrays in the first round after five games of a best-of-five series. Augusta has posted a 332-320-50-14 record in franchise history and has made the playoffs in six of their 10 seasons in Augusta.

Hockey to be played in ......WII!

While the NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA, and even the WWE have all seen their professional athletes and entertainers appear on Nintendo's Wii, there is at least one three-letter acronym in the world of sports that has yet to be converted for use with the motion-sensing Wii Remote. 2K Sports today announced that it will bring "the first and only" NHL- and NHLPA-licensed game to the Wii with NHL 2K9.
Already announced for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2, NHL 2K9 will retain the full feature set of those versions, while adding motion-sensitive controls. 2K Sports has said that players will be able to use the Wii Remote as a virtual hockey stick to mimic a variety of actions, including face-offs and slap shots.
To mark the occasion of the NHL arriving on Nintendo's latest system, Mario will make an appearance on the red carpet at tonight's awards for the 2008 NHL season. The mustachioed plumber is no stranger to hockey fans, as his "Super Mario" moniker has long been the nickname of Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux.
All four versions of the game are being developed by Visual Concepts, and will see release in the fall.

The latest "Eklund Says"
The following is most likely not to happen(cause it's eklund):
Now that Glen Murray has cleared waivers, I am being told that the winger is likely to be bought out by the Bruins. It is no secret that there are some who want to reunite Marray with Thornton in SJ. I am told the Bruins attempted a few creative solutions prior to opting for waiving and buying out Murray.Glen's production has fallen off, but once bought out he will be a UFA...And at least five or six teams will be very hot on this guy. The two favorites are San Jose and Edmonton. The Oilers tried, and some would say almost succeeded, in making a deal that would have sent Glen Murray to Edmonton two drafts ago in Columbus. "The deal fell apart at the VERY last second. the Oilers and Lowe were then (and remain still) very into Murray and the idea of making him an Oiler."Other teams that will be pursuing Murray include: NJ, Ottawa, Pit, Dallas, and LA.Want another name that may be returning to the NHL...Robert Esche. I am hearing rumours that the goalie that truly impressed everyone during his gig as America's goalie in these past Worlds could be heading back to the NHL. Teams interested include LA, Tampa, and Ottawa.I for one remain a big Robert Esche fan and I believe the guy has every bit the makings of a major comeback into the NHL...
Talking to sources in Toronto yesterday it has become obvious to me that Jay Bouwmeester is VERY much available. Although I continue to hear that the Sens, Sabres, Avalanche, Blues and Kings have serious interest, one source told me that "In my opinion, and according to several of the scouts I have met with, the Maple Leafs, Bruins and Devils may be offering up the most.On Sundin...A source told me that tonight there is "a buzz inside the Habs, and that a few are speculating that there may have been some movement regarding Sundin in the last hour." Take it for what it's worth!

Reminder:Expand to Canada Bettman
NHLPA Executive Director Paul Kelly told the Team 1040 radio in Vancouver on Thursday that revenue sharing and untapped Canadian markets could have a role in helping to ensure the future financial success of the NHL.
Kelly, who became Executive Director of the NHLPA in October of 2007, said a key goal for the union was to help ensure the financial success of every team in the league. He noted that if some current markets could not maintain a stable franchise, or if the NHL opted to expand again, Canada could be the land of opportunity.
"We're very supportive of the Canadian franchises, not only because of the history and tradition, but also because of the results," Kelly explained on the TEAM 1040.
"I mean the Canadian fans are like no others," he continued. "They're passionate, they come out and support it, they buy the merchandise, and they're knowledgeable about the sport. And it seems to us a no-brainer that if you're going to expand or you're going to relocate, that you first and foremost have to consider some of the major hubs here in Canada. You know, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Quebec City, perhaps Halifax if they had an arena that could sustain an NHL team. But I think there are locations in Canada that would strongly support the NHL game."
No matter where a team is located, Kelly said the union wants to make sure each club has a strong economic base, and he has some ideas about how that goal might be better realized.
"It will ultimately come down to the revenue-sharing system we have in the game," Kelly told the Team 1040. "I mean the haves - the big market teams - are doing very, very well financially, and they could probably do more in the way of revenue sharing to help out those teams that are in the bottom five or six on the list to help make them more stable financially.
"But long-term, the players aren't singling out any particular franchises and saying 'that's got to go'. They really would like to see all the existing franchises survive, if that's possible."

Vermette To Canucks Update

Vermette is scheduled to go to arbitration at the end of July, and the award he receives may prompt a move, if he cannot fit into Ottawa's salary structure.

Glen Murray on Waivers
Glen Murray has been placed on waivers by the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
Murray still has one year remaining on his contract at $4.15 million. If he clears waivers, the Bruins can either buy him out, trade him, retain him on the big league roster, or send him to the minors so that his salary doesn't count against the cap.

Savard to get Extention
Chicago coach Denis Savard will likely get a contract extension according to owner Rocky Wirtz.
"He's got nothing to worry about," Wirtz said. Savard led the 'Hawks to a 17-point improvement last season and has a very talented, albeit young, group on his hands this year. Look for an announcement to come prior to training camp.
